The Secret Pool of Wonders
Lily loved to explore. Every day after school, she'd wander through the woods behind her house, discovering secret places most people never noticed.
One afternoon, she pushed through a tangle of blackberry bushes and found something magical—a crystal-clear pool tucked in a circle of ancient oak trees. The water shimmered with colors that changed like a rainbow.
"Welcome, young explorer," said a gentle voice.
Lily looked around. Then she looked closer at the pool's edge. There, curled on a warm rock, was a small sphinx with soft golden fur and wise amber eyes. She was only the size of a cat, with tiny wings that folded neatly against her sides.
"I'm Cleopatra," the sphinx said. "I've been spying on you for days. You have the heart of an adventurer."
"Spying on me?" Lily laughed. "That sounds mysterious!"
"I watch over this forest," Cleopatra explained. "This pool shows secret things to those who are pure of heart. Would you like to see?"
Lily nodded eagerly. Together, they peered into the water. The pool showed marvelous things—families of rabbits playing, fairies dancing in moonlight, trees whispering secrets to each other. It was like spying on a hidden world.
"Can I visit again?" Lily asked.
"Always," said Cleopatra. "But you must promise never to tell anyone who might hurt this place. Magic must be protected."
"I promise," Lily said solemnly.
All summer, they were best friends. Lily would visit the sphinx, and together they'd spy on the magical world through the pool. Cleopatra taught Lily that true magic wasn't just about seeing wonders—it was about protecting them, too.
When school started again, Lily kept her secret. Some things are too special to share with everyone. And every time she walked through those woods, she knew magic was watching over her, just as she watched over it.
The best friendships, she learned, are the ones you guard with your heart.
