The Secret Pool of Wonder
Lily was the best spy in the whole neighborhood. Every day after school, she'd peek through fences, follow butterflies, and discover secrets no one else noticed.
One Tuesday, while spying on the old Miller house, she spotted something strange. Blue light flickered behind the tall wooden fence. Being a curious spy, she climbed the apple tree and looked over.
There, in the middle of an overgrown garden, was a magical pool. The water sparkled like liquid stars, and floating in the center was the most unusual creature Lily had ever seen—a tiny sphinx no bigger than a teddy bear, with golden wings and kind, ancient eyes.
"Hello, young spy," the sphinx said in a voice like gentle bells. "I've been waiting for someone curious enough to find me."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"I can do many things," the sphinx twinkled. "This pool shows wonders to those with pure hearts. But first, you must answer my riddle."
Around them, fireflies began to glow—green instead of yellow. They moved in silly, jerky ways, bumping into each other like little zombie fireflies.
"Those are my zombie fireflies," the sphinx explained. "They forgot how to fly properly, but they still try. Just like everyone deserves friends, even when things are hard."
"What's your riddle?" Lily asked bravely.
"The sphinx smiled. "I have cities but no houses, mountains but no trees, water but no fish. What am I?"
Lily thought hard, remembering the map her father showed her. "A map!"
"Correct!" The sphinx clapped golden paws. "Dip your hand in the pool."
When Lily did, the water turned into a window showing everywhere she'd ever been—her classroom, her grandmother's kitchen, the park where she played. But it also showed something new: a new neighbor girl sitting alone in her yard.
"Everyone deserves a friend," the sphinx whispered. "Even when they're hard to see at first."
Lily understood. She wasn't just a spy who watched from trees. She was someone who could help.
Every day that summer, Lily visited the secret pool. She brought the new neighbor, whose name was Maya. Together they watched the zombie fireflies dance and listened to the sphinx's stories about magic, friendship, and how the best discoveries aren't things—they're people.
And sometimes, the best spy isn't someone who finds secrets. It's someone who finds friends.
