The Secret Pool of Wishes

Lily's golden retriever, Barnaby, was the best dog in the whole world. He cuddled with her when she was sad and played fetch until they both flopped onto the grass, panting happily. But one Tuesday afternoon, Lily noticed something strange.

Barnaby kept looking at his orange collar, then at the backyard fence, then back at her with twinkling eyes. When Lily's mom called her inside to take her daily vitamin, Barnaby slipped out the gate! Lily swallowed her cherry tablet in one gulp and tiptoed after him.

Through the meadow they went, past the babbling creek, until Barnaby stopped at the edge of the most beautiful pool Lily had ever seen. The water sparkled like liquid diamonds, and floating in the center was a small wooden boat.

"Are you a spy?" Lily whispered. Barnaby gave a small bark and stepped into the boat, then looked back at her expectantly. Lily climbed in beside him.

The boat glided across the magical water without anyone rowing. Around them, fireflies danced even though it was daytime. In the middle of the pool, they found an enormous orange tree growing right out of the water, its branches heavy with glowing fruit.

An old turtle popped up from the water. "Welcome, young friends. This is the Pool of Wishes, where children's dreams grow like fruit. Barnaby has been our secret spy, searching for someone with a pure heart to help us."

Lily gasped. "You mean my dog is a magical spy?"

Barnaby licked her hand proudly.

The turtle continued, "Our wish-tree is fading. Children have stopped believing in their own dreams. We need someone to wish with all their heart—not for toys or treats, but for something that helps others."

Lily closed her eyes tight. She remembered her friend Emma, who was in the hospital and couldn't play outside. "I wish for Emma to get better and run through the sunshine again!"

The orange tree burst into light. A single fruit drifted down, and when Lily caught it, it transformed into a glowing golden ball. The turtle smiled. "Take this to Emma. The Pool of Wishes has granted your request because you wished for someone else."

Barnaby led Lily home through the meadow. When she gave Emma the golden ball, her best friend sat up, smiling brightly. "I feel wonderful, Lily! Let's go play!"

That night, Lily whispered to Barnaby, "You're the best spy ever."

He curled up beside her with a contented sigh. And from that day on, Lily knew that the best wishes are the ones we make for others—and that sometimes, the most magical adventures begin with following a faithful friend.
