The Secret Pool of Stars

Lily pressed her nose against the garden fence, peeking through the wooden slats like a tiny spy. Her new neighbor, a boy named Oliver, knelt beside his pool—but this was no ordinary swimming pool. The water inside shimmered with colors Lily had never seen before.

"What are you doing?" Lily called out, forgetting she was supposed to be invisible.

Oliver jumped, then smiled. "Watching the stars swim. They only come out when the moon is full. Want to see?"

Lily's eyes widened. She had never heard of swimming stars! She hurried next door, her bare feet padding softly across the cool grass. When she reached the pool's edge, she gasped. Tiny lights—hundreds of them—danced beneath the surface. They looked like stars captured in glass jars, swirling and spiraling in patterns that made her think of fairy dust.

"They're not really stars," Oliver explained. "They're magical water sprites. My grandmother told me about them. They only visit pools where children dream big dreams."

Lily sat beside him, mesmerized. "What's the biggest dream you've ever had?"

Oliver thought for a moment. "I want to be an explorer and discover a new island. What about you?"

"I want to write stories that make children believe in magic," Lily said softly. The sprites swirled toward her, their lights growing brighter. One even jumped out of the water, turning into a spark of gold before disappearing.

"They like your dream," Oliver said. "The sprites feed on imagination. That's why most people never see them—grown-ups stop believing in wonderful things."

They sat together as the moon climbed higher, watching the magical light show. Lily realized something wonderful: she had found not just a magical pool, but a friend who understood that the best adventures are the ones you share.

"We should come back tomorrow night," Oliver said. "Maybe they'll show us something new."

Lily nodded, her heart full of wonder. The water sprites had given her something more precious than magic—a reminder that the world is full of secrets waiting to be discovered, especially when you have a friend to discover them with.
