The Secret Pool of Friends

Lily followed the orange cat past the old mango tree, her heart thumping with excitement. The cat—whose name was Marmalade—had been visiting her window for three nights, mewing to follow him. This time, she had.

They arrived at a crystal pool hidden deep in the forest. The water sparkled like someone had sprinkled diamonds across its surface. But what made Lily gasp was what stood beside it—a giant bull with golden horns and the gentlest brown eyes she had ever seen.

"Don't be scared," Marmalade said, making Lily jump. "This is Ferdinand. Everyone thinks bulls are scary, but Ferdinand only wants to make friends."

Ferdinand lowered his massive head and nuzzled Lily's hand with his soft nose. He wasn't scary at all—he was like a big, clumsy puppy.

Then Ferdinand did something amazing. He pressed his palm against a smooth stone near the pool's edge. The water began to swirl with rainbow colors, and images appeared in its depths—children playing together, animals helping each other, smiles and laughter everywhere.

"The pool shows us what could be," Marmalade explained. "Ferdinand found it when he ran away from the bullring. He was so lonely, but the pool showed him that true friends see with their hearts, not their eyes."

Lily understood. She had been afraid of the old house down the street because it looked spooky. But now she wondered—what if someone kind lived there, just waiting for a friend?

Ferdinand lowered his palm again, and the pool changed. It showed Lily visiting the spooky house, meeting an old lady who baked the best cookies and told wonderful stories.

"Sometimes," said Marmalade, "the bravest thing you can do is say hello to someone new—especially when they seem different from you."

Lily threw her arms around Ferdinand's neck. "Thank you for showing me."

She promised to visit every day, and to finally knock on that old house's door. As she waved goodbye, Marmalade curled up beside Ferdinand, both watching her go with the same knowing smile.

Some friendships are found in the most unexpected places—like a magical pool, a talking cat, and a bull who taught a little girl that judging others is like judging a book by its cover. The real magic is giving everyone a chance.
