The Secret Pool Friend

Lily loved exploring the woods behind her house. Every Saturday, she'd pack her magnifying glass and notebook, ready for adventure. But one rainy afternoon, she discovered something magical.

Behind a thicket of blackberry bushes lay a tiny pool she'd never seen before. The water shimmered with an orange glow, as if someone had dropped a little piece of sunshine right into it. Lily knelt beside the pool and gasped.

"Hello there!" a small voice bubbled up from the water.

Lily jumped back, then leaned in closer. A tiny orange fish with sparkly scales was swimming near the surface, smiling at her.

"I'm Finn!" said the fish. "And you're my new friend!"

Lily had never met a talking fish before. "I'm Lily. But how can you talk?"

"This is a magic pool," Finn explained. "Once every hundred years, it appears for exactly one week. Only children with kind hearts can see it. And only those who truly need a friend can hear me."

Lily's heart squeezed. She had just moved to this town and hadn't made any friends at school yet.

"Will you be my friend?" Finn asked. "Even though I'm a fish and you're a human?"

"Yes!" Lily said. "Friends are friends, no matter what."

Every day that week, Lily visited Finn. They played games—she'd tell him about her world, and he'd show her the magical creatures living in his pool. There were rainbow-colored frogs, singing snails, and butterflies that left trails of glitter wherever they flew.

On the last day, the pool began to fade.

"I have to go," Finn said sadly.

"Will I ever see you again?" Lily's eyes filled with tears.

Finn nudged something toward her—an orange stone that glowed like the pool itself. "Keep this. Whenever you feel lonely, hold it tight. True friendship never really disappears, you know. It just changes shape."

The pool vanished. But Lily still had the orange stone, and more importantly, she had learned something wonderful: the best friends can appear in the most unexpected places, and they stay in your heart forever.

That Monday at school, Lily noticed a new girl sitting alone. Lily smiled, walked over, and said, "Hello there! Would you like to be my friend?"

The girl's face lit up. Just like Finn's pool had. Like magic.
