The Secret Pool Agent
Lily found the most perfect orange she had ever seen. It glowed like a tiny sunset in her palm, warm and mysterious. Her grandmother had given it to her with a wink. "This one's special," she'd said. "Wait for the full moon."
That night, Lily crept outside in her pajamas. The old swimming pool in her backyard sparkled under silver moonlight. But tonight, something was different. Ripples danced across the water even though the air was still.
"Psst! Are you the new spy?" a voice whispered.
Lily jumped. A tiny frog sat on the pool's edge, wearing what looked like a miniature monocle made of water droplets.
"I'm not a spy!" Lily whispered back. "I'm just holding an orange."
The frog hopped closer. "That's no ordinary orange. That's a Moon Fruit! They only grow once every hundred years. And you're exactly who we need."
"Who's 'we'?"
"The Pool Agents," said the frog importantly. "We guard the gateway between worlds. But someone has stolen the Silver Key, and without it, the pool will turn into regular old pond water forever. No more magic. No more dreams slipping through to visit children at night."
Lily's heart raced. "What can I do?"
"Peel your Moon Fruit," the frog instructed. "Then place the peel on the water's surface. It will show you the truth."
Lily carefully peeled the glowing orange. The fragrance made her think of sunshine and happy days. She placed the peel on the pool.
The water transformed into a mirror that showed another world—and there, darting through the reeds, was a shadowy figure clutching something silver.
"That's him!" cried the frog. "The lonely salamander who forgot how to make friends."
Lily understood. "He's not mean. He's just lonely."
She called out to the pool, her voice ringing clear: "You don't have to steal to be noticed! We'll be your friends! Just bring back the key!"
The水面 shimmered. A sad salamander emerged, clutching the Silver Key. "Really? You'd be friends with me?"
"Really," said Lily, and the frog nodded.
The salamander returned the key, and the pool burst into magical light. Fireflies danced. The water tasted like wishes.
Lily learned something wonderful that night: sometimes, people act badly because they're lonely. And the greatest adventures are the ones where everyone becomes friends.
Now, whenever Lily visits the pool under a full moon, she's still a spy— spying for opportunities to make new friends.
