The Secret of Whispering Creek
Lily pushed her messy brown hair out of her eyes and knelt by the edge of Whispering Creek. The water sparkled like diamonds in the afternoon sun, and she knew something magical was about to happen.
Her dog Barnaby, a golden retriever with a heart full of adventure, wagged his tail excitedly. He had found something strange near the old willow tree – a spy glass that gleamed purple when Lily looked through it.
'What do you see, Barnaby?' Lily whispered, pressing the magical spy glass to her eye.
The world changed! The creek became a river of stars, and from beneath the water emerged a zombie – but not a scary one. This zombie was made entirely of wet leaves and river stones, with glowing moss for eyes and a smile made of twigs.
'I am not a monster,' the leaf zombie spoke in a voice like rustling reeds. 'I am the Guardian of the Creek. I have been asleep for one hundred years!'
Lily wasn't afraid. She could see kindness in the mossy eyes. 'Why did you wake up now?'
'Because children like you still believe in magic,' the Guardian answered. 'Most grown-ups stopped believing long ago. That's why the water began to lose its sparkle. But you – you kept wondering, kept exploring, kept hoping for something wonderful.'
Barnaby barked happily and splashed into the water, playing with the leaf zombie. The Guardian laughed, and the sound was like rain falling on a tin roof.
'Will you be my friend?' Lily asked. 'Even though you're made of leaves and stones?'
'That's the best kind of friend to have,' the Guardian said. 'I never forget, and I never leave.'
Lily learned that day that the most magical things aren't the ones you can see – they're the ones you believe in. And sometimes, the strangest creatures make the truest friends.
Every afternoon after school, Lily and Barnaby returned to Whispering Creek. And the water sparkled brighter than ever, because somewhere wonderful, someone believed.
