The Secret of the Wishing Pool
Lily loved to spy on the secrets of the forest. Every Saturday, she would creep quietly through the trees, watching animals play and flowers bloom. It was her favorite adventure.
One hot afternoon, Lily followed a butterfly until she found herself in a part of the woods she had never seen before. In the middle of a clearing was a beautiful pool of water, sparkling like diamonds in the sunlight.
But the most amazing thing was sitting beside the pool—a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. It was a sphinx!
"Hello, little friend," the sphinx said kindly. Her voice sounded like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for you."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You know my name?"
"I know many things," the sphinx replied with a mysterious smile. "I am the guardian of this Wishing Pool. It grants one wish each day to someone with a pure heart."
Just then, a giant bear emerged from the trees. Lily froze, but the bear didn't look scary at all. It padded over to the sphinx and nuzzled her hand like a friendly puppy.
"This is Barnaby," the sphinx said, scratching the bear's ears. "He's my best friend in the whole forest."
Lily giggled as Barnaby rolled onto his back, wanting belly rubs.
"So, little friend," the sphinx said, looking at Lily kindly. "What would you wish for?"
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for toys, or candy, or even to fly. But looking at the sphinx and Barnaby together, she knew what really mattered.
"I wish that everyone could find a friend as good as Barnaby," Lily said.
The sphinx's eyes sparkled with happiness. The water began to glow, and suddenly dozens of magical creatures appeared—rabbits, deer, foxes, and more—all pairing up as friends.
"A wonderful wish," the sphinx said. "You've learned the secret of true magic, Lily. Friendship is the greatest treasure of all."
Lily waved goodbye to her new friends and skipped home, knowing the best adventures are the ones you share with friends—and that sometimes, the kindest wish is for others to be happy too.
