The Secret of the Whispering Palm

palmhatspysphinx

Penny loved her yellow fedora more than anything. Whenever she wore it, she wasn't just Penny—she was Detective Penny, the most curious spy in all of Maple Street. She spied on butterflies. She spied on clouds. Once, she even spied on a very suspicious squirrel.

One afternoon, Detective Penny was spying on something new. Her grandpa's palm tree was whispering.

Penny crept closer, pressing her palm against the rough bark. "Hello?" she whispered.

"About time you noticed!" said a tiny voice.

High above, sitting on a swaying frond, was a creature no bigger than a teacup. It had the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and a wise, whiskered face.

"A sphinx!" Penny gasped. "But you're supposed to be enormous and guard pyramids in Egypt!"

"Travel size," the sphinx said, puffing out her small chest. "I'm Zara, and I'm quite lost. My sisters and I were playing tag above the clouds when a gust of wind swept me away. Now I can't find my way home."

Penny's detective heart thumped with excitement. This was the biggest mystery she'd ever solved!

"I'll help you," Penny promised. "But what's your riddle? Aren't sphinxes supposed to ask riddles?"

Zara smiled. "I have one: What has to be broken before you can use it?"

Penny thought hard. She thought about her magnifying glass. She thought about her detective kit. Then she smiled.

"An egg!"

"Correct!" Zara cheered. "Now, how do we get me home?"

Penny had an idea. She took off her favorite yellow hat and held it up like a boat. "Hop in!"

Zara fluttered down and settled inside. Penny closed her eyes and wished—with all her heart—for Zara to find her family.

Suddenly, the wind picked up. Penny's hat lifted into the air, higher and higher, sailing through clouds painted pink and orange by the setting sun. Below, she saw three sphinxes circling and calling.

"Zara!" they cried.

The hat landed gently, and Zara tumbled into her sisters' paws.

"Thank you, Detective Penny," Zara said, pressing a warm golden feather into Penny's hand. "If you ever need us, just whisper to the palm tree."

Penny watched them soar into the stars, her yellow hat fluttering back to earth beside her. Some secrets were too magical to tell—and the best friends were the ones who found you when you weren't even looking.
