The Secret of the Starry Pool
Lily and Max loved to play spy. Every Saturday, they'd sneak around the neighborhood with their toy binoculars, whispering secret codes and hunting for mysteries.
One hot afternoon, their baseball game took an unexpected turn. Max swung the bat with all his might, and the ball sailed over the fence—right into old Mrs. Chen's backyard.
"We'll have to go on a mission," Lily whispered dramatically. "Like real spies!"
They tiptoed through the gate and stopped in wonder. Mrs. Chen wasn't gardening or reading. She was standing beside her swimming pool, but it wasn't filled with water. The pool sparkled like liquid diamonds, and tiny stars floated inside it, glowing softly.
"My baseball!" Max gasped. It sat beside the pool.
Mrs. Chen turned and smiled. "Ah, young spies. I wondered when you'd discover my secret."
"What is that?" Lily asked, pointing at the glowing pool.
"This is a Star Pool," Mrs. Chen explained. "It collects wishes that people make on real stars. Every night, I send them back up so they can come true."
Max's eyes widened. "Can we make a wish?"
"Of course. But remember," she said gently, "the best wishes are ones that help others."
Lily closed her eyes and wished that her sick friend Toby would feel better. Max wished for his grandmother's knee to stop hurting so she could play baseball with him again.
They tossed a coin each into the Star Pool. Ripples of silver light spread outward, and suddenly, the pool glittered brighter than ever.
"Your wishes are on their way," Mrs. Chen said. "Now, take your baseball and go. And don't worry—your secret is safe with me."
On Monday, Lily ran to Max's house, grinning. "Toby's feeling better! The doctors can't explain it, but he's playing outside again!"
"And my grandma called!" Max exclaimed. "She said her knee suddenly stopped hurting this morning. She wants to play catch!"
They high-fived, feeling like the luckiest spies in the world. They had discovered magic, made wishes, and learned that the best secrets—just like the best wishes—are the ones you share with friends.
