The Secret of the Starry Garden

Leo thought he was too old for magic tricks. At ten years old, he knew exactly how the world worked. But lately, he'd been spying on his grandmother's garden through his bedroom window, watching strange lights flicker among the vegetables after midnight.

Tonight, Leo slipped outside with his iPhone flashlight ready. His bare feet tiptoed through the dewy grass until he reached the garden gate. That's when he saw it—a magnificent creature with silvery fur and horns that glowed like moonbeams. A great bull, curled up asleep among the pumpkins.

The bull opened one eye, sparkling like a galaxy. "You've been spying for three nights, little one," it said softly. "Were you ever going to say hello?"

Leo's iPhone slipped from his hand. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," the bull replied, standing up gracefully. "I'm Orion, keeper of this magical garden. And you've discovered our secret."

Orion led Leo to a patch of ordinary-looking spinach. But as the bull breathed on it, the leaves turned to shimmering emerald crystals. "This is dream-spinach," Orion explained. "One leaf gives you wonderful dreams. Two leaves let you visit dreamland yourself. But three... well, three leaves might make you never want to wake up."

Leo's grandmother appeared from behind the tomato plants, smiling. "Now you know why I always add extra spinach to our dinners," she winked.

"Grandma, you knew about Orion?" Leo gasped.

"My dear boy," she said, hugging him, "magic lives wherever you look for it. Some people use their phones to play games. Others use them to capture proof that wonder exists." She handed him his iPhone, which now showed star maps instead of apps.

"Magic needs someone who believes in it," Orion said gently. "Will you help us guard the garden?"

Leo looked at the dream-spinach, at his magical grandmother, at the starry bull who had chosen him. Suddenly, being grown-up didn't seem so important anymore.

"Yes," Leo said, and for the first time in years, he felt something wonderful bloom in his chest—pure, unshakeable magic.
