The Secret of the Starlight Pool

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house, especially the magical garden out back. But the most special place was the small, shimmering pool hidden behind the old palm tree. Her grandmother called it the Starlight Pool because on clear nights, it sparkled like someone had sprinkled diamond dust across the water.

One warm evening, Lily crept outside in her pajamas to watch the stars. She sat by the pool, dangling her bare feet in the cool water. Suddenly, something bobbed to the surface — an orange! Not just any orange, but one that glowed with a soft, golden light.

"That's strange," Lily whispered, picking it up. The orange felt warm in her hands, almost like it was alive.

The old palm tree rustled, even though there was no wind. "You've found the Courage Orange," a gentle voice seemed to come from the tree itself. Lily gasped but didn't run away. She had always suspected magic was real.

"Who's there?" she called out bravely.

A tiny face appeared in the palm tree's bark — a tree spirit, small and wise, with twinkling eyes. "I am Palma, guardian of this garden. The orange appears only when someone needs courage. What are you afraid of, little one?"

Lily thought about her worries. "Tomorrow's swimming contest. I'm afraid I'll come in last. All the other kids are so fast."

Palma smiled kindly. "The secret isn't being fastest, my dear. The secret is believing in yourself and helping others along the way. When you swim tomorrow, imagine you're floating in this magical pool, and that courage will fill your heart."

Lily ate a small piece of the orange. It tasted like sunshine and dreams, warm and sweet. Suddenly, she felt brave.

The next day, during the contest, Lily wasn't the fastest swimmer. But when she saw another racer struggling, she stopped to help them finish. Everyone cheered louder for her kindness than for the winner's speed.

That evening, she returned to the Starlight Pool. The orange was gone, but in its place floated a single star, glowing gently. Palma's voice whispered, "You found the true magic — not in winning, but in caring. That is the bravest thing of all."

Lily smiled, understanding now that courage meant being kind even when it matters most.
