The Secret of the Spinach Patch

Lily hated spinach. Every dinner, her parents said, 'Eat your spinach, it'll make you strong!' But Lily only picked at the green leaves on her plate.

One afternoon, she was sent to the garden to pick fresh spinach for dinner. As she reached for a leaf, something incredible happened. The spinach leaf twitched.

Lily blinked. The leaf didn't just twitch—it waved at her.

She knelt down carefully. A tiny face poked out from between the leaves. It was no bigger than her thumb, with skin as green as spinach and eyes bright as polished emeralds.

'Please help us!' the tiny creature squeaked. 'The orange moon is fading! Without its glow, our patch will wither!'

Lily's heart raced. 'What can I do?'

'You must run to the Spirit Garden before midnight! Follow the orange path—only you can see it!' The creature pointed a trembling finger, and suddenly Lily saw it: a glowing orange trail winding through her backyard, disappearing into the woods.

She'd never been much of a runner. But tonight, she ran like the wind.

The orange path led her past familiar places transformed by magic. Her old oak tree sparkled with golden light. The neighborhood cat, usually so grumpy, purred melodic greetings as she passed.

The path ended at a hidden garden she'd never noticed before. In the center floated a small orange moon, its light growing dimmer by the second.

'The moon needs joy to shine!' a chorus of tiny voices called from the spinach plants surrounding the garden.

Lily thought hard. What brought her joy?

She thought of her grandmother's hugs, her dog's silly antics, the way her dad made up silly stories at bedtime. And then she remembered something: the first time she'd tried spinach salad with strawberries and realized she actually liked it.

She laughed aloud. The orange moon flickered, then blazed brighter!

'Joy!' the spinach creatures cheered. 'You saved our moon!'

They showered her with the most beautiful thing: fresh, sweet spinach leaves that tasted like sunshine and dreams.

That night, Lily ate every bite of spinach at dinner. 'It's not just strong food,' she whispered to her amazed parents. 'It's magic food.'

And every night after, Lily made sure to visit her garden friends, running along the orange path to keep their moon shining bright.
