The Secret of the Sparkling Pool
Lily crouched behind the orange gardenia bush, her heart pounding with excitement. She was on a very important mission: she had decided to spy on the mysterious visitor who came to her backyard every evening at sunset.
For three nights in a row, Lily had seen something strange happening near the swimming pool. Tiny ripples appeared on the water's surface, even though there was no wind. Soft, glowing lights flickered beneath the surface like underwater stars. And once, she could have sworn she heard singing.
Tonight, Lily was determined to discover the truth. She wore her lucky yellow raincoat and carried her father's old binoculars. The pool water sparkled in the fading sunlight, turning from bright blue to deep purple as the sky darkened.
Suddenly, a tiny splash broke the silence. Lily pressed the binoculars to her eyes and gasped.
A small goldfish was swimming near the edge of the pool, but this was no ordinary fish. Its scales shimmered like tiny jewels, and its fins glowed with a soft, magical light. The fish was nudging something floating in the water — a bright orange peel from Lily's lunch.
"Hello there," a voice said.
Lily nearly dropped her binoculars. She looked around, but no one was there.
"Down here, silly," the voice giggled.
Lily looked back at the pool. The goldfish was looking right at her, its tiny mouth moving.
"You can talk?" Lily whispered, creeping closer.
"Of course I can!" the fish said. "I'm Finnegan, and I'm not really a goldfish. I'm a Water Sprite in disguise. I've been visiting your pool because it has the most delicious orange peels. They give us magic energy!"
"Magic energy for what?" Lily asked, her eyes wide.
"To keep the ocean dreams alive!" Finnegan explained. "Every night, Water Sprites swim through all the pools and ponds in the world, collecting happy thoughts from children. We use these thoughts to create beautiful dreams that float out to sea. Without happy thoughts, children would have nightmares forever."
Lily felt something warm in her heart. "That's wonderful! But why were you swimming with that orange peel?"
Finnegan laughed, a sound like tiny bells ringing. "Orange peels are our favorite! They smell like sunshine and happiness. Would you like to help me collect happy thoughts tonight?"
Lily nodded eagerly. For the next hour, she sat by the pool, sharing stories about her best friend Emma, about learning to ride her bike, about the time she found a perfect skipping stone. As she spoke, she saw tiny lights swirling around Finnegan, rising up into the night sky like glowing bubbles.
When the moon was high, Finnegan swam close to the edge. "Thank you for helping me, Lily. And thank you for not being afraid to spy on me. Curious children make the best friends."
"I'll leave you more orange peels tomorrow," Lily promised.
"I know," Finnegan said with a wink. "Water Sprites always know."
From that night on, Lily left an extra orange at snack time. And whenever she saw ripples in the pool at sunset, she knew her friend Finnegan was near, collecting dreams to share with children everywhere.
