The Secret of the Silver Baseball
Lily loved baseball more than anything in the world. Every Saturday, she'd grab her glove and run to the park behind the old oak tree. But today was different. Today, she found something magical.
Behind home plate, beneath a swaying palm tree that shouldn't even grow in their town, something glittered. Lily dug through the sand and pulled out a silver baseball. It hummed with warmth, and when she held it in her palm, golden sparkles danced around her fingers.
"You found it!" whispered a voice. Lily spun around to see a boy about her age, wearing a jacket with too many pockets. "I've been looking for that for three hundred years."
"Three hundred years?" Lily laughed. "You don't look a day over ten."
"I'm a Time Spy," the boy explained seriously. "We travel through time collecting magical things before they fall into the wrong hands. That baseball belongs to the Stars."
He showed her his palm – it glowed with a map of constellations. "Every time someone makes a wish on a shooting star, this baseball appears somewhere special. You're the first person in forever who could see it."
Lily's eyes widened. "What does it do?"
"It grants one wish to the purest heart." The boy smiled. "And I think that's you."
Lily thought hard. She could wish for anything – endless baseball games, a magical glove, or even to become a Time Spy too. But she remembered how lonely the boy looked, traveling through time alone.
"I wish," Lily said, "that you could have a friend on every single one of your adventures."
The silver baseball burst into thousands of golden butterflies. They swirled around the Time Spy, and suddenly, his palm glowed even brighter.
"Thank you," he whispered, tears sparkling in his eyes. "Now I'll never be alone again." He handed her a small silver star. "And neither will you. Whenever you play baseball, hold this in your palm, and I'll be cheering for you."
Lily still plays every Saturday. And sometimes, when she hits a home run, she sees golden sparkles dancing in the breeze, and she knows her friend is watching from somewhere wonderful in time.
