The Secret of the Orange Pool
Lily and Oliver were best friends who loved going on adventures in their backyard. One hot summer afternoon, while playing spy and detective, Lily spotted something strange glimmering beyond the tall oak fence.
"Quick! Our mission begins now," Lily whispered, pressing her finger to her lips. Oliver nodded, grabbing his plastic magnifying glass. They were on a secret spy mission to discover what lay beyond the mysterious fence they'd never explored before.
Crawling through a hidden gap in the wooden boards, the two friends gasped in wonder. Before them stretched the most magical pool they'd ever seen — its water shimmered like liquid orange, glowing softly under the afternoon sun. The surface sparkled with tiny flecks of gold that danced and swirled like captured sunshine.
"It's beautiful," Oliver breathed, his eyes wide. But then he froze. "Wait — what's that?"
Hunched near the orange pool's edge sat a small green figure. It looked like a zombie from storybooks, with patchy skin and slow movements, but this creature was busy carefully placing floating orange flowers onto the glowing water. Each flower released a soft, musical ping as it touched the surface.
"Is that... a zombie?" Oliver whispered, hiding behind Lily's shoulder.
Lily stepped forward bravely. "Hello?"
The creature jumped, turning sad droopy eyes toward them. "Oh! I didn't hear you. I'm Zimby, and I'm making a wishing pool. The orange flowers carry wishes to the moon."
Zimby wasn't scary at all — he was lonely. The other magical creatures had run away because he looked different, but all Zimby wanted was to share his beautiful wishing pool with friends.
Lily and Oliver looked at each other and smiled. This was their most important spy mission yet: making a new friend feel welcome.
"Can we help?" Oliver asked.
Zimby's face lit up like sunshine. Together, the three friends spent the afternoon placing orange flowers on the magical pool. Each wish they made floated upward on a golden bubble — wishes for ice cream, for endless summer, and most importantly, for new friendships that would last forever.
As the sun began to set, Zimby hugged them tightly. "Thank you for seeing me, not just how I look. That's the greatest magic of all."
Lily and Oliver learned that day that true friends look past appearances to find the wonder underneath. And every summer after, they returned to their secret orange pool, where three friends would make wishes together under the golden light of friendship.
