The Secret of the Orange Palm
Lily loved being a spy. Every morning, she would sneak behind the big palm tree in her backyard, watching through her binoculars. But she wasn't spying on people—she was spying on magic.
One hot afternoon, Lily spotted something shiny near the old orange tree. She crept closer, her bare feet whispering through the warm grass. There, glimmering in the sunlight, was a tiny door hidden between the roots of the orange tree!
Lily knelt down and tapped gently. The door swung open, and out fluttered a small creature with wings like a dragonfly and skin as bright as a sunset.
"You found my home!" the creature chirped. "I'm Pip, the orange guardian. I give every orange its special vitamin power so children stay healthy and strong."
Lily's eyes widened. "You mean YOU make oranges good for us?"
Pip nodded proudly. "But I'm thirsty. The water source has dried up. Can you help?"
Without hesitation, Lily cupped her hands and ran to the garden hose. She filled her palm with cool water and hurried back. Pip drank gratefully, then did a joyful flip in the air.
"Thank you, spy friend!" Pip sang. "For your kindness, I'll show you something special."
Pip sprinkled glittering dust over the nearest orange. Suddenly, the fruit began to glow with a warm golden light.
"Now this orange has EXTRA magic," Pip explained. "Whoever eats it will feel happy all day long."
Lily picked the magical orange and shared it with her little brother, who had been feeling sad. As he took a bite, his frown turned into the biggest smile.
That day, Lily learned that the best kind of spy isn't someone who secrets away—but someone who discovers ways to help others. And every summer, she still visits Pip behind the orange tree, ready for another magical adventure.
