The Secret of the Orange Moon

Lily loved climbing the old palm tree in her backyard. Its rough bark scratched her hands, but she didn't mind. From the top, she could spy on the whole neighborhood—watching Mrs. Higgins feed her cats, seeing the ice cream truck turn down Maple Street, and dreaming about adventures waiting to happen.

One Tuesday, something peculiar appeared in the palm tree's highest branches. It wasn't a coconut or a bird's nest. It was an orange glowing orb, shimmering like a tiny moon caught in the leaves.

Lily climbed higher, her heart pounding with excitement. As she reached for the mysterious orange light, it whispered her name. The light wasn't just a glow—it was a tiny creature named Opal, no bigger than a strawberry, with wings like stained glass.

"I've been waiting for a friend," Opal said in a voice like wind chimes. "My magical iPhone—that's 'I Phone My Friends' in our language—broke when I fell from the Sky Kingdom. Can you help me get home?"

Lily's eyes widened. A magical creature from another world needed her help! She carefully cupped Opal in her hands, feeling the creature's warmth like sunshine.

"I know just what to do," Lily said. She ran to her craft box and gathered glitter, sequins, and her favorite orange marker. Together, she and Opal built a new magical device—decorating it with sparkles and drawing stars all over it.

"Now, hold my hand," Opal instructed. "And think of the kindest thing you've ever done."

Lily closed her eyes and remembered sharing her lunch with new girl Maya at school, even though she'd been really hungry. She thought about helping her little brother learn to tie his shoes. She remembered planting flowers with Grandma.

The orange light began to glow brighter and brighter, lifting them both into the air! Lily gasped as they soared above her house, above the palm tree, higher and higher until they floated among real stars.

"Thank you, Lily," Opal said, landing on what looked like a tiny floating island. "You're the best friend anyone could ever have. Whenever you need me, just look at the moon and think of kindness. I'll hear you."

Lily woke up in her bed the next morning, wondering if it had all been a dream. But there, on her nightstand, sat a tiny orange stone that glowed softly in the sunlight. And in her palm, she could still feel the warmth of new friendship and the magical truth: kindness is the greatest adventure of all.
