The Secret of the Midnight Pool

Maya couldn't sleep. The moonlight spilled through her window, calling her to the backyard. She tiptoed past her parents' room, careful not to let the floorboards creak. In the garden, the great **palm** tree swayed gently, its fronds whispering secrets in the warm summer breeze.

Something glimmered in the swimming **pool**. Maya crept closer, hiding behind the rosebushes like a little **spy**. What she saw made her gasp.

A tiny goldfish named Finley was leaping out of the water, transforming into a fish-boy with shimmering scales that turned to skin. He stood on the pool edge and reached into a bowl of **spinach** leaves that had been left out for the garden fairy.

"I need this to complete my magic spell," Finley whispered, his voice like tiny bubbles. "The Great **Goldfish** King will grant me one wish if I can make the most delicious soup for the Moon Festival."

Maya stepped out from behind the bush. "I can help! My grandmother makes the best soups."

Finley almost jumped back into the pool. "You can see me? No human has seen a magic goldfish in a hundred years!"

Together, they cooked spinach soup under the moonlight, adding crumbled crackers from Maya's pocket and a pinch of fairy dust that Finley kept in a tiny shell. When the goldfish king arrived in a splash of silver light, he tasted their soup and smiled.

"This is made with friendship," the King said. "For that, you both get a wish."

Finley wished for more nights like this. Maya wished that every child could see the magic in their own backyard.

The King nodded, and for the rest of the summer, Maya and Finley made midnight soups, swam in the glowing pool, and learned that the best magic of all is the kind you share with a friend.
