The Secret of the Midnight Pool

Lily had the puffiest, curliest **hair** in her whole class. Every morning, her mom tried to tame it with ribbons and barrettes, but by lunchtime, it would burst free like a dandelion in the wind.

"Why can't my hair be smooth and straight like everyone else's?" Lily sighed, letting her **cat** Mittens curl up in her lap. Mittens purred and patted Lily's cheek with a soft paw.

That night, when everyone was asleep, Lily heard splashing from the backyard. She peeked out her window and saw something magical: the family pool was glowing with silver light!

Lily tiptoed outside in her pajamas. Without thinking, she dove right into the shimmering water, **swimming** deeper than she ever had before. The water felt warm and bubbly, like a giant bathtub of starlight.

Suddenly, a furry head popped up beside her. But it wasn't Mittens!

"Boo!" said a friendly voice.

Lily gasped. It was a **bear**! A small, glowing bear with a constellation pattern on his fur.

"Don't be scared," the bear said. "I'm Barnaby, the Secret Keeper of the Midnight Pool. I've been **spy**-ing on you for weeks, watching you worry about that beautiful hair of yours."

Lily's eyes went wide. "You've been spying on me?"

"Only in the nicest way!" Barnaby laughed, making little bubbles. "I wanted to show you something. Look at your reflection."

In the glowing water, Lily saw her hair floating around her face like a curly crown. It shimmered with every color of the rainbow.

"Your hair isn't messy," Barnaby said gently. "It's magic! It catches starlight and dreams. That's why it never stays tame — it's too full of wonder to be held down."

Lily smiled, really smiled, for the first time in months. "So being different is... good?"

"Being different is being YOU," Barnaby said. "And that's the most magical thing of all."

When Lily woke up in her bed the next morning, she found a silver barrette shaped like a little bear on her pillow. At school, she wore her **hair** wild and free, and when her classmates asked how she got so brave, she just winked.

Some secrets are meant to be kept, she thought. But the best secrets are the ones that help you love yourself.
