The Secret of Sunfish Creek

Lily hated her daily vitamin. Every morning, her mom would hand her the orange chewable tablet, and Lily would make a face.

"But it tastes like yucky oranges," Lily complained.

"Vitamins make you strong and healthy," Mom said with a smile.

Lily sighed and swallowed it anyway. She wanted to be strong for something very important—her swimming lessons at Sunfish Creek. Every Saturday, she went to the creek with her teacher, Ms. Pearl, but she was still scared to put her face in the water.

"What if something scary lives down there?" Lily asked.

Ms. Pearl laughed kindly. "The only things living down there are fish and frogs. Maybe a few turtles."

But Lily knew better. Her older brother had told her about the zombie fish of Sunfish Creek—ancient fish that swam upside down and bumped into rocks because they were half-asleep.

The next Saturday, Lily stood at the edge of the creek, trembling in her pink swimsuit. The water sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight. She dipped one toe in. Cool, refreshing, not scary at all.

"Ready to try floating?" Ms. Pearl asked.

Lily took a deep breath and lay back on the water. Something bumped her leg. She jumped up, splashing everywhere.

"What was THAT?"

Something small and green poked its head above the surface. It wasn't a zombie fish at all. It was the tiniest frog she had ever seen, wearing what looked like a tiny crown made of pond weeds.

"Ribbit," said the frog.

"Did that frog just talk?" Lily gasped.

The frog nodded. "I'm Prince Frederick, guardian of Sunfish Creek. You look like you need some courage vitamins."

"You know about vitamins?"

"Of course! Why do you think the water here makes swimmers so brave?" Prince Frederick hopped onto a lily pad. "Every morning, magical vitamin dust falls from the sky into our creek. It makes anyone who swims here feel happy and brave."

Lily looked at the sparkling water in wonder. "Really?"

"Really. Try again. And this time, splash your face. The vitamin water will help."

Lily took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and dunked her face in the water. When she came up, she felt different. Lighter. Braver. Happier.

"I did it!" Lily cheered.

"You did!" Ms. Pearl clapped.

Prince Frederick winked at Lily before disappearing under a lily pad.

That night at dinner, Lily's mom set the orange vitamin tablet next to her plate.

"You know," Lily said with a secret smile, "I think I'm starting to like vitamins after all."

"That's wonderful!" Mom said.

Lily didn't explain about the magical vitamin dust in Sunfish Creek, or about Prince Frederick, or how zombie fish were actually friendly frog guardians. Some secrets were too magical to share.

But every Saturday, Lily couldn't wait to go swimming. And every morning, she swallowed her vitamin without complaint, knowing that somewhere, magic was real—and she was brave enough to find it.
