The Secret of Midnight Whiskers
Lily's cat Mittens was no ordinary cat. Every night at midnight, Mittens would slip out the window with a tiny black bag. One Tuesday, Lily decided to follow.
She tiptoed after Mittens through the moonlit garden, past the sleeping roses, and into the Whispering Woods. There, beneath an ancient oak tree, Mittens met a squirrel, an owl, and a very badger who looked extremely serious.
"Agent Mittens," whispered the badger. "Do you have the special delivery?"
Mittens nodded and opened her tiny bag. Inside glowed a single golden pill.
"The Courage Vitamin," said the owl wisely. "Young Oliver needs it tomorrow."
Lily gasped! A leaf crunched beneath her sneaker.
"Someone's spying on us!" squeaked the squirrel.
Lily stepped into the moonlight. "I'm sorry! I was curious."
Mittens sighed. "Lily, you've discovered our secret. We're the Friendship Society. We help children who need extra courage."
"Oliver is the new boy at school," Lily realized. "He's so shy he never speaks."
"Exactly," said Mittens. "Tomorrow is the class presentation. Oliver is terrified. The Courage Vitamin will help him believe in himself."
"But won't that be cheating?" Lily asked.
The badger smiled. "The vitamin only works if the courage is already inside you. It just helps it come out."
Lily thought about Oliver — how he smiled at her drawings, how he helped a fallen bird, how he shared his sandwich with a hungry dog. "He is brave," she said. "He just doesn't know it yet."
"Will you help us deliver it?" Mittens asked.
Lily's heart raced with excitement. "Yes!"
Together, they placed the glowing vitamin beside Oliver's lunchbox. The next morning, Oliver found it. He smiled, stood tall, and gave the best presentation anyone had ever heard.
After school, he high-fived Lily. "I don't know why, but today I felt... brave."
Lily winked at Mittens, who was watching from a tree branch. "Sometimes," she said, "we just need a little help finding the courage that's been inside us all along."
That night, Mittens curled up beside Lily, purring like any ordinary cat. But Lily knew the truth — her best friend was a secret agent of friendship, and together, they had magic to do.
