The Secret Mission of Midnight
Lily loved her fluffy black cat, Midnight. But she didn't know that after bedtime, Midnight became something extraordinary.
One night, Lily couldn't sleep. She peeked through her door and saw Midnight wearing a tiny spy magnifying glass around his neck! The cat tiptoed to the garden, and Lily followed in her pajamas.
"What are you doing?" she whispered.
Midnight jumped! "Lily! You found my secret! I'm a garden spy!" To Lily's amazement, the cat could talk!
"A spy? For who?"
"For the Magical Creatures Society!" Midnight explained. "Someone's been stealing the glowing papayas from the moon tree. These papayas give magical dreams to children who need them most."
Lily's eyes widened. "That's terrible!"
They followed tiny footprints to the old oak tree. There they found the thief—a small, clumsy zombie made of fallen leaves and twigs! He was trying to carry three papayas at once.
"Why are you stealing?" Midnight asked, his detective notebook ready.
The leaf-zombie's twiggy shoulders slumped. "I'm lonely. I thought if I brought gifts, someone would be my friend. But nobody wants to play with a zombie made of old leaves."
Lily felt sad for him. "That's not true! We'll be your friend!"
"Really?" The zombie's acorn eyes lit up. "But I stole the papayas..."
"Put them back, and let's play tag instead!" Lily said.
The zombie returned the papayas, and they played until dawn. As Lily crawled back into bed, she learned something wonderful: the best way to make friends isn't with gifts—it's with kindness.
That night, every child had magical dreams, and Lily, Midnight, and their new friend planned tomorrow's adventure.
