The Secret Mermaid's Friend
Lila loved the old oak tree in her backyard. Its branches stretched like welcoming arms, and she had carved a tiny door into its trunk years ago. Every afternoon after school, she would peek through the hole and pretend she was a **spy** on a secret mission.
One hot July day, something magical happened. As Lila pressed her eye to the wooden peephole, she saw a shimmering blue light dancing near the garden pond. She crept closer, her bare feet silent on the soft grass.
To her wonder, a tiny girl no bigger than her **palm** sat on a lily pad, her tail sparkling like sapphires in the sunlight. The mermaid was **swimming** joyful circles, creating tiny rainbows in the water droplets.
"Hello!" Lila whispered, kneeling beside the pond.
The mermaid froze, then smiled. "I'm Marina! Are you going to tell anyone about me?"
Lila shook her head. "I promise to keep your secret. Being a spy means knowing when to stay quiet."
From that day on, Lila visited Marina every afternoon. They shared stories and laughter. Marina taught Lila songs from her underwater kingdom, and Lila brought Marina flower petals and pretty stones.
One day, Marina looked worried. "My friend **Bull**frog is sick," she said. "He's the bravest frog in the pond, but even brave friends need help sometimes."
Lila knew what to do. She ran to her house and returned with a bowl of fresh water and some lettuce leaves. Together, she and Marina nursed Bullfrog back to health.
"Thank you," Marina said, squeezing Lila's finger. "True friends help each other, no matter how big or small they are."
Lila smiled, understanding the most important lesson of all. Friendship isn't about being powerful or important. It's about showing up, keeping secrets, and caring for each other.
As summer turned to autumn, Marina had to return to her underwater home. But every full moon, Lila still sits by the pond, waiting for the sparkle of blue that means her best friend has come back to visit.
And sometimes, if you're very quiet, you can still hear two friends laughing by the water's edge—one big, one tiny, both with hearts full of magic and love.
