The Secret in My Palm
Lily loved visiting the stream behind her grandmother's house. The water always sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight, and the air smelled of sweet moss and adventure.
One hot afternoon, Lily knelt by the water's edge and cupped her hands to catch a cool drink. But before she could sip, something amazing caught her eye. In the pool of water gathered in her palm, something tiny moved.
It wasn't a bug. It wasn't a fish. It was a little creature, no bigger than her thumb, with skin that shimmered like rainbows and hair that floated like seaweed. A water sprite!
Lily held very still, afraid to scare it away. She watched it splash happily in the shallow water of her palm, creating tiny ripples that tickled her skin. The sprite seemed to be dancing!
"Hello there," Lily whispered, her voice as soft as a breeze.
The sprite froze, then looked up with eyes like tiny blue marbles. It smiled—and splashed water playfully at Lily!
Lily giggled. The sprite wasn't afraid at all! It seemed delighted to have found someone to play with.
"I'm Lily," she said. "Will you be my friend?"
The sprite clapped its tiny hands and did a joyful spin in the palm-water. That was a yes!
Every day that summer, Lily returned to the stream. She learned that the sprite's name was Splash, and that water sprites made sure streams stayed clean and happy for all the animals who drank there. Lily would spy on Splash from behind trees sometimes, watching the sprite work its magic on the water, purifying it and making it sparkle.
In return, Splash taught Lily something wonderful: even the smallest creatures have important jobs, and kindness makes the world more beautiful.
When summer ended and Lily had to go home, she made a promise. "I'll take care of water everywhere I go," she told her new friend. "Because now I know what a special gift it is."
Splash hugged Lily's finger—one tiny, watery embrace—and disappeared back into the stream with a ripple of goodbye.
Now whenever Lily sees water, she smiles. She knows her friend is out there somewhere, making the world cleaner and happier, one drop at a time.
