The Secret Goldfish Society

Max pulled his favorite red hat down over his ears. It was a Tuesday, which meant baseball practice at the park. But today, something felt different.

Barnaby, Max's golden retriever, bounced beside him, tail wagging like a metronome. Most people thought Barnaby was just an ordinary dog who liked belly rubs and chasing tennis balls. But Max knew the truth.

Barnaby was a spy.

Not a regular spy with gadgets and dark glasses. Barnaby was a different kind of spy—a Secret Sniffer of Magical Things.

At the park, Max's baseball team was warming up. Coach Thompson hit a ball toward Max, but Barnaby suddenly dashed away, barking at something near the pond.

"Barnaby! Come back!" Max called. But his dog kept barking, pawing at the ground near a small orange goldfish that had jumped onto the grass.

The goldfish wasn't flopping around like fish normally do. It was standing on its tail fin, wearing a tiny monocle, and adjusting a miniature bowtie.

"About time you arrived," said the goldfish in a squeaky but proper voice. "I've been waiting. The Society of Wonder needs your help."

Max's mouth fell open. He looked around to make sure nobody else was watching.

"Who... what ARE you?"

"Professor Finnigan," the goldfish said importantly. "And your dog here—" he nodded at Barnaby "—is one of our best field agents. Didn't you know?"

Barnaby puffed out his chest proudly.

Professor Finnigan explained that magical creatures everywhere were disappearing, and the Society needed Max and Barnaby to help find them. Max's red hat, it turned out, was actually a magical disguise—anyone wearing it could see secret doorways to hidden worlds.

"But why me?" Max asked, adjusting his hat.

"Because," said Professor Finnigan, "you're the kind of boy who notices wonder. And that's the rarest magic of all."

Max smiled, petting Barnaby's soft golden fur. Some secrets were worth keeping.

"When do we start?" he asked.

Barnaby barked once, sharply. Professor Finnigan grinned.

"Right now," said the goldfish. "But first—you might want to practice that baseball swing. Our mission involves a very special ball game against some pixies. And they never, ever lose."

Max gripped his baseball bat tighter. Saving magical creatures from disappearing? Playing ball against pixies?

This was going to be the best Tuesday ever.
