The Secret Garden Wish

Lily loved to spy on the magic in her grandmother's garden. Behind the old oak tree, fireflies danced in spirals at midnight, and flowers hummed soft lullabies when no one was watching.

One evening, Lily peeked through the fence boards and saw someone new—a boy with silver hair sitting by the pond, talking to her goldfish, Goldie. Most goldfish just swam in circles, but Goldie could wiggle her fins and make rainbow bubbles that smelled like cotton candy.

"Are you a spy?" the boy asked, looking right at her hiding spot. Lily stepped out, her face warm.

"No, just curious. I'm Lily. What's your name?"

"Oliver," he said, smiling. "Would you like to see something magical?"

He held out his palm, and Goldie swam right up to the surface. When her nose touched Oliver's hand, a bubble floated up and popped—showing a tiny picture of a fluffy dog.

"That's my dog, Barnaby!" Lily gasped. "How did you do that?"

"Goldie shows you what your heart truly wishes for," Oliver explained. "She's a wish fish."

Lily's heart beat fast. She wished for many things—for courage, for adventure, for someone to share secrets with. But most of all, she wished for a true friend.

Goldie swam to Lily's palm next. When the bubble popped, it showed Oliver and Lily together, laughing as fireflies danced around them.

"That's your wish?" Oliver's eyes sparkled. "Mine too."

From that day on, Lily and Oliver were the best of friends. They spied on firefly dances, shared secrets with Goldie, and Barnaby the dog would curl up between them during story time. Lily learned that the best wishes aren't for things you can hold—they're for moments you can share with a friend.

And sometimes, magic is simply finding someone who wishes for you too.
