The Secret Garden Spy
Lily was the best backyard spy in the whole neighborhood. Every Saturday, she crept through the tall grass with her magnifying glass, searching for mysteries. But nothing had prepared her for what she found behind the old oak tree.
There, standing near the garden fence, was a zombie! But this wasn't a scary monster from movies. He was small, with patchwork clothes and a funny hat, and he looked terribly sad.
"Hello?" Lily whispered, stepping out from behind her spinach plant.
The zombie jumped. "Oh! You saw me?" He spoke softly, not at all like a monster. "I'm Zim. I was hoping to be invisible."
"Why?" Lily asked.
"Because nobody wants to play with a zombie." Zim looked down at his feet. "I've been watching you kids play padel in your driveway. The hitting and running look so fun. But I'm too afraid to ask."
Lily's heart melted. She knew exactly how it felt to be left out. "Zim, would you like to join our game? We're playing right now!"
His eyes lit up like sparklers. "Really?"
"Really!" Lily led him to the driveway where her friends were playing. At first, everyone was surprised. But once Zim started playing, they couldn't stop laughing. He was terrible at padel — he kept missing the ball and tripping over his own feet — but he giggled the whole time.
After the game, Lily ran inside and came back with something special: slices of sweet papaya from her kitchen. "My grandma says this is the friendship fruit," she explained.
They all sat under the oak tree, munching on papaya and talking about everything and nothing. Zim had never had friends before, and Lily's friends had never met a zombie who loved padel and hated scaring people.
That day, Lily learned that the best spies don't just uncover secrets — they discover new friends. And sometimes, the things that seem scary at first are just lonely hearts waiting for someone to say hello.
From then on, Zim was part of every Saturday game. And Lily? She became the first spy in history whose mission was to make sure nobody ever felt invisible again.
