The Secret Garden Riddle

Lily pushed through the tangled vines behind her house, where no one ever went. That's where she found the stone sphinx, half-buried in flowers.

The sphinx had the body of a lion and the head of a wise person carved from gray stone. Its eyes sparkled like morning dew. Lily had read about sphinxes in books—ancient guardians who asked riddles!

"Hello," Lily whispered.

The stone lips didn't move, but a warm voice echoed inside her mind. *Hello, young explorer. I have waited many years for someone brave enough to find me.*

Lily's dog Max bounded through the bushes, barking happily. Her cat Mittens padded silently behind, golden eyes wide.

*Ah,* said the sphinx. *A dog who protects and a cat who watches. You have brought clever companions.*

"Can you really talk?" Lily asked.

*I can speak to those with open hearts and curious minds," the sphinx replied. *Long ago, I was placed here to protect something precious. But I forgot what it was, until you arrived.*

"What did you forget?"

*That the greatest treasure isn't gold or jewels. It's the courage to seek new adventures and the friends who join you.*

The sphinx's stone eyes twinkled. *For bringing me this wisdom, I offer you a gift.*

A single flower bloomed at the sphinx's feet—a flower that changed color like a rainbow. Lily plucked it gently.

*This flower will never wilt,* the sphinx said. *And whenever you need courage, hold it and remember: adventures await those who look for them.*

Max barked and Mittens purred as Lily tucked the rainbow flower into her pocket. She knew she would return to this secret garden often, ready for whatever magical surprises waited.

After all, the best adventures are the ones we share with friends—both human and animal alike.
