The Secret Garden Pool

Lily's golden dog Rusty always knew where the magic was hiding. One sunny afternoon, he tugged her sleeve toward the old stone pool behind grandmother's garden.

The water shimmered like liquid diamonds, and at its center sat a tiny sphinx no bigger than a tea cup. Her marble wings sparkled with dewdrops.

"Welcome, brave one," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I've waited seven moons for someone kind enough to find me."

Lily's eyes widened. "Are you... real?"

"I'm as real as your imagination allows," the sphinx winked. "But I need your help. My friend Ferdinand is trapped on the other side of the garden."

Rusty barked excitedly and led them through rosebushes to where a magnificent bull with a coat like autumn leaves stood stuck between two stone pillars.

Ferdinand wasn't scary at all. His eyes were gentle, full moons of kindness. "I was chasing a butterfly," he rumbled softly, "and became wedged. Now I can't reach my favorite patch of clover."

The sphinx fluttered over. "Together, we can solve this! Lily, you're small enough to crawl through. Rusty, you can dig away the loose stones. Ferdinand, you must push with all your might when I say 'NOW!'"

Lily squeezed through the gap, Rusty's paws flew like lightning, and when the sphinx called out, Ferdinand gave a mighty push. With a sound like thunder wrapped in velvet, the pillars groaned and gave way.

Ferdinand was free! He nuzzled Lily's cheek with his velvety nose. "Thank you, my friends. Because you helped me, I'll share my secret clover patch with you forever."

The sphinx smiled. "Remember, little one: true magic isn't about flying or wishes. The real magic is friendship, courage, and helping those in need."

That evening, as grandmother called them for dinner, Lily realized something wonderful. The pool, sphinx, bull, and her brave dog Rusty—they'd all been waiting just for her courage and kindness.

Some magic, she discovered, lives right in your own backyard, especially when you bring along a friend or two.
