The Secret Garden Guardians
Lily's golden dog Rusty always knew when magic was near. His ears would perk up, his tail would wag in circles, and he'd dance around like he had secret paws. One Tuesday afternoon, Rusty led Lily behind the old oak tree in their backyard. There, nestled between twisted roots, was a tiny door no bigger than a shoe.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Lily whispered. Rusty barked softly.
Together they spied through a crack in the wood. Inside, the garden glowed with purple fireflies. But the most amazing creature sat in the center—a mossy green figure with leafy hair and flower petal skin. It looked like the zombies from Lily's storybooks, but instead of being scary, it was gently wrapping a blanket of woven spider silk around a shivering bluebird.
"The wind knocked its nest down," the moss creature spoke in a voice like rustling leaves. "I'm making sure it stays warm."
Lily gasped. The creature turned, and instead of groaning like a zombie, it smiled. "Hello, little friend. I'm Moss, the garden guardian. I'm not scary—I just look a bit green because I live among the plants."
Rusty trotted right over and licked Moss's mossy hand. The creature laughed—a sound like twinkling bells.
"We thought you were a zombie!" Lily admitted.
Moss winked. "Zombies are make-believe monsters. I'm very real—and very busy. Would you like to help me protect the garden?"
Lily nodded eagerly. Every day after school, she and Rusty became secret garden helpers. They learned that appearances can be deceiving, and that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures have the kindest hearts.
Moss taught them that true magic wasn't about spells or potions. It was about caring for small things: a fallen bird, a crushed flower, a lonely beetle. And the best friends, Moss said, come in all shapes and sizes—even green ones with mossy hair.
That summer, Lily and Rusty learned that being a guardian of tiny things was the greatest adventure of all.
