The Secret Friend by the Water

padelwaterswimmingspy

Lila loved playing padel with her dad at the seaside club. Every Saturday morning, they'd hit the ball back and forth in the enclosed court, laughing when the ball bounced off the glass walls. The best part was being right next to the sparkling blue water. Lila could see the waves rolling onto the sand while she played.

One day, while waiting for her dad to get them lemonade, Lila noticed something strange near the water's edge. A tiny creature, no bigger than her tennis racket, was peeking from behind a rock. It had green scales, curious golden eyes, and little wings that shimmered like pearls.

"A real spy!" Lila whispered, giggling. But instead of running away, the creature waved.

"I'm Sprocket," the little being said. "I've been watching you play padel for weeks. It looks like swimming in the air!"

Lila's eyes went wide. "You can see me? Can you swim?"

Sprocket shook his head sadly. "Water sprites aren't born knowing how to swim. We have to learn, just like humans. But I'm afraid of going under."

Lila knelt by the water. "I could teach you! My dad taught me last summer. It's magical once you learn."

Every Saturday after padel, Lila met Sprocket by the water. She showed him how to float, how to kick his legs, and how to hold his breath. At first, Sprocket splashed and sputtered. But Lila was patient. She held his hand and counted to three.

"One, two, three — swim!"

One magical afternoon, Sprocket kicked off from the sandy bottom and glided through the water like a little fish. His wings sparkled underwater, and he popped up laughing.

"I'm swimming! I'm really swimming!" Sprocket cheered.

Lila clapped. Her new friend wasn't afraid anymore.

"Thank you, Lila," Sprocket said. "You weren't scared of me even though you thought I was a spy. Sometimes the best friends come from the most unexpected places."

Lila smiled, watching the waves dance in the sunlight. She had learned something too — courage isn't about being brave all alone. It's about helping someone else find their bravery, together.
