The Secret Backyard Adventure

Lily and Max were best friends who loved adventures. One hot summer day, they were sitting by Lily's pool when something strange caught Max's eye.

"Look!" Max whispered, pointing to the wooden fence. "There's a spy watching us!"

Lily squinted. A pair of googly eyes poked through a knothole in the fence. Then a scruffy golden dog popped its snout through and let out a happy bark.

"That's not a spy," Lily giggled. "That's Buster from next door!"

But then the weirdest thing happened. Buster's owner, old Mr. Higgins, shuffled into view. He walked with stiff arms and groaned like a zombie from the movies!

"It's a zombie!" Max gasped, grabbing his water noodle like a sword.

Lily's heart raced, but she noticed something. Mr. Higgins wasn't groaning from being scary — he was singing! And he wasn't walking stiffly on purpose. He was carrying a giant tray of chocolate chip cookies, and he was trying not to drop them.

"Hello, neighbors!" Mr. Higgins called out, his face breaking into a warm smile. "I've been working on my cookie recipe all morning. Would you like to try some?"

Lily and Max looked at each other and burst out laughing. The scary zombie was just a kind neighbor who walked a little funny because he'd hurt his leg last month.

That afternoon, they all sat by the pool together. Buster chased butterflies while Mr. Higgins told funny stories about when he was a kid. Lily learned that sometimes things seem scary at first, but if you look closer, you might find something wonderful instead.

And Max decided that being a spy was hard work — sometimes the "mystery" you're trying to solve is just someone being nice.

As the sun set, Lily whispered to Max, "That was the best adventure ever."

Max nodded, mouth full of cookie. "Being friends with our neighbors is way better than fighting zombies."
