The Secret Agent of Rainbow Lane

spyhairzombie

Lily was the best pretend spy in all of Rainbow Lane. Every Saturday, she put on her sparkly purple sunglasses and crept through her backyard with her trusty magnifying glass, searching for mysteries.

One afternoon, Lily spotted something strange. Her neighbor Max was stumbling around his garden with messy hair sticking straight up, walking like a sleepwalking penguin. His arms were stretched out stiff in front of him, and he was making soft grumbling sounds.

"A zombie!" Lily gasped, dropping behind the rosebush. She'd seen zombies in movies, but she never thought she'd spot one in real life – especially not at Max's house!

Lily the spy crept closer, her heart pounding with excitement and just a tiny bit of fear. The zombie kept bumping into things, knocking over a garden gnome, then tripping over a watering can.

"Raaaagh," the zombie moaned, reaching toward a bright red apple on the ground.

That's when Lily noticed something. The zombie wasn't trying to eat brains. He was trying to pick up the fallen apples from Max's apple tree! And those stiff arms? They were holding a basket.

"Max?" Lily called out softly.

The zombie froze. Slowly, Max turned around, blinking sleepy eyes. "Lily? What are you doing here?"

"I was... spying," Lily admitted. "I thought you were a zombie!"

Max started laughing, his messy hair bouncing with every giggle. "Nope! I was helping my grandma pick apples before breakfast, but I stayed up way too late reading. I'm basically a walking zombie today!"

Lily laughed too. "Want me to help? Even spies know when to take a break from detective work."

Together, they gathered all the apples. Max's grandma gave them both fresh apple juice and warm cinnamon muffins. As they sat on the porch eating, Lily realized something important: sometimes things that seem scary at first turn out to be wonderful friends in disguise.

And that's how the best spy on Rainbow Lane found something better than a mystery – she found a friend.
