The Secret Agent Goldfish

orangegoldfishspyzombie

Lily was not an ordinary girl. She was a spy—a secret agent with the most important mission in the world. And her partner? A tiny orange goldfish named Finley who lived in a bowl on her nightstand.

"Operation Bedtime is a go," Lily whispered, slipping on her mother's oversized sunglasses. She crept through the hallway, avoiding the creaky floorboard by the bathroom. Her mission: retrieve Mr. Fluffington from the living room before her parents noticed he was missing.

Mr. Fluffington was her little brother's stuffed bunny, and he had somehow escaped during nap time. Now he sat on the couch, surrounded by the family's collection of board games.

Lily reached for the bunny when—CRASH! Thunder shook the house. Rain pounded against the windows like tiny drumsticks. The lights flickered.

Then she saw it: a shadow moving across the wall. Her heart pounded. Was it a monster? A ghost? A zombie?

"Finley, stay calm," she told her goldfish (who was, of course, safely in his portable spy tank she carried on missions). "We've faced scarier things. Like the vacuum cleaner."

The shadow moved closer. Lily grabbed Mr. Fluffington and prepared to make her escape. But then the lights came back on.

It was just her dad, shuffling sleepily with a cup of tea. "Lily? What are you doing up?"

"Spy stuff," she whispered importantly. "Protecting the household."

Her dad smiled and handed her something. A clementine from the kitchen. "Even spies need their vitamins, Agent Lily."

As Lily munched on the sweet orange fruit, she realized something. Being brave didn't mean not being scared. Being brave meant doing the right thing even when you were frightened.

And that's how Agent Lily and her faithful partner Finley completed their most dangerous mission—saving Mr. Fluffington from the terrible living room zombie (which was just her very tired dad).

Some heroes are big. Some are small. And some? Some are just the right size for a fish bowl.
