The Secret Agent Goldfish
Lily's goldfish, Goldie, wasn't like other fish. While most goldfish just swam in circles and waited for food flakes, Goldie had a secret. Every night when Lily's parents thought she was asleep, she would whisper into her old iPhone that she used for games.
"Are you there, Goldie?" she would ask.
Through some kind of magic that neither of them quite understood, Goldie's thoughts would appear on the screen as little bubbles. Sometimes just simple things: "Hungry" or "More water." But sometimes, something extraordinary would happen.
"Tonight we have a mission," Goldie's message appeared one Tuesday. "I need you to be my spy."
Lily's eyes went wide. She pressed her face against the glass bowl. "A spy? You mean like in the movies?"
"Better," Goldie's bubbles floated across the iPhone screen. "Mrs. Perkins' cat is stuck in the oak tree again. Nobody can reach him. But I can guide you."
Lily grabbed her flashlight. The iPhone showed a little map that Goldie was somehow drawing, showing exactly which branches were safe to climb. When Lily reached the highest branch, there was the cat—too scared to come down.
"Use your phone's flashlight to signal your mother," Goldie instructed. "Three flashes means help needed."
Lily's mother saw the signal from the kitchen window and came with the ladder. Together they rescued the cat, who purred happily in Lily's arms.
"How did you know?" Lily asked later, sitting by Goldie's bowl.
"Fish see everything," Goldie's message appeared. "We hear through the water pipes, we watch through reflection. Nobody notices a goldfish spying on the world."
Lily giggled. "So what's our next mission, Agent Goldie?"
"Tomorrow," the fish typed, "we help Mr. Henderson find his lost glasses. They're behind the refrigerator. But for now..." A new bubble appeared. "Can I have some more food flakes?"
Lily smiled and sprinkled food into the bowl. Some adventures could wait until tomorrow. Being a spy was hungry work, after all.
