The Secret Agent Goldfish
Leo loved his pet goldfish Finnick more than anything. Every day after school, he would press his nose against the glass tank and watch Finnick swim gracefully through the water, his orange scales flashing like tiny coins.
"You're just a fish," his big sister scoffed. "You can't even understand me."
But Leo knew better. Sometimes, late at night when everyone was asleep, he'd whisper secrets to Finnick, and the goldfish would swim to the very front of the tank, his mouth opening and closing as if he were answering back.
One magical night, Leo woke to find his room glowing with soft blue light. The water in Finnick's tank was swirling like a tiny tornado, and suddenly—POOF!—Finnick grew legs!
"Leo!" Finnick said in a bubbly voice. "I need your help! I'm not just a goldfish. I'm a secret agent for the Magic Pond Society, and someone is stealing all the sparkly stones from the bottom of Crystal Lake!"
Leo's eyes went huge. "A spy? You're a SPY?!"
Finnick pressed a fin to his lips. "Shh! It's classified. But I can't solve this mystery alone. Are you brave enough to help me?"
Leo didn't even have to think. "YES!"
Finnick sprinkled magical water over Leo, and suddenly he could breathe underwater! Together, they swam through the bathroom pipes and emerged in Crystal Lake, where every stone was losing its beautiful glow.
"The Shadow Eels!" Finnick whispered. "They're jealous of beautiful things and want to make everything dark. Quick—follow me!"
They found the eels piling up stolen gems in a murky cave. Finnick had a plan. "You distract them while I—I mean, Agent Finnick—sneaks the stones back!"
Leo swam boldly up to the eels. "Hey! Why are your caves so ugly? Maybe you need some decorating tips!" The eels were so offended they chased him all the way to the lake's surface while Finnick replaced every single stone.
When they returned to Leo's room, exhausted but proud, Finnick shrunk back to his goldfish size. But now Leo knew the truth: his best friend was the bravest secret spy in all the waters.
"Our mission, should you choose to accept it," Finnick bubbled with a wink, "is to keep each other safe, no matter what."
Leo smiled, pressing his finger to the glass. "Friends and partners in secret agent work? Best promise ever."
