The Secret Agent Dog
Lily's golden retriever Barnaby was the sleepiest dog in the world. Or so she thought.
One Tuesday afternoon, while Lily was pushing spinach around her plate at dinner, Barnaby trotted into the kitchen wearing a tiny black bowtie. He tapped her ankle with his paw and winked.
"Lily," he said in a smooth, whispery voice. "I need your help. I'm actually a spy for the Kingdom Under the Sink."
Lily dropped her fork. "You can TALK?"
"Only on missions," Barnaby said, adjusting his bowtie. "And we have a big one. King Finley — that's your goldfish — sent an urgent message. The Tooth Fairy lost her wand somewhere in this house, and without it, children everywhere will wake up with loose teeth forever."
Lily's eyes widened. Her loose tooth had been wiggling for days!
"What can I do?" she asked.
"Eat your spinach," Barnaby whispered. "It's not just healthy. In our kingdom, it gives you the power of Extra Seeing. You'll spot magical things invisible to regular eyes."
Lily gulped down three giant spoonfuls. Suddenly, the kitchen sparkled. Tiny glowing footprints appeared on the floor, leading toward the living room.
"Good work, partner," Barnaby said, pulling a magnifying glass from his fur. "Let's spy."
They followed the magical trail behind the sofa, where they found a tiny glittering wand stuck between two cushions. But just as Lily reached for it, the family cat — Agent Whiskers, Barnaby explained — pounced.
"Nice try, spy dog," the cat hissed.
Barnaby stood firm. "Whiskers, every hero needs a sidekick. Even tooth-brushing heroes."
The cat paused. "I suppose I've always wanted to be a sidekick..."
Together, the three returned the wand to King Finley, who swam happily in his bowl, his scales shimmering with gratitude. "Thank you," the goldfish bubbled. "For believing in magic, even when it seems impossible."
That night, Lily felt her tooth fall out. Under her pillow, the Tooth Fairy left a sparkling note: *To the bravest spy team I've ever known.*
Barnaby curled up at the foot of her bed, already asleep. But Lily noticed his tail gave a little secret wag.
Some dogs, she decided, were very good spies indeed.
