The Secret Agent at Shortstop
Leo loved his beat-up old baseball. It had scuff marks from a hundred games and grass stains from a thousand catches. But today, something magical happened. As Leo tossed the ball in the air, it whispered—actually whispered!
"Pssst! I'm Agent Blue. Are you ready for a secret mission?"
Leo blinked. The baseball could talk! And it claimed to be a spy!
"What kind of mission?" Leo asked, his heart pounding.
"The neighborhood dogs are forming a friendship club," said Agent Blue. "But Buster the bulldog thinks he's too grumpy to join. He needs a friend, Leo. Someone who sees past his grumbles."
Leo knew Buster. The bulldog barked at everyone and chased balls away from the park. No one played near him.
"How can I help?" Leo asked.
"Throw me," said Agent Blue. "Trust me."
Leo wound up and threw the ball toward Buster's fence. It sailed through the air and landed right at Buster's paws.
The bulldog looked up in surprise. His tail gave one little wag. Then another.
Leo approached slowly. Buster growled, but Agent Blue rolled closer. The baseball bumped the dog's nose.
"Play," Agent Blue whispered, and suddenly the ball was glowing softly.
Buster's eyes went wide. He nudged the ball back to Leo. Leo pushed it gently. Buster pushed it back.
For an hour, they played their quiet game. Other kids watched in amazement. Soon, other dogs gathered around. They weren't scared anymore.
"Buster's playing!" someone said.
By sunset, Buster was surrounded by new dog friends and human friends too. His tail wouldn't stop wagging.
"Mission accomplished," Agent Blue murmured, fading back to an ordinary baseball.
That night, Leo tucked his baseball spy under his pillow, wondering what adventure tomorrow would bring. Some friends just need someone to throw them the first ball.
