The Secret Above the Wires

Lily and Max loved the old baseball field behind their house. The grass was always soft, the sky always blue, and they could play until the stars came out. But today, something strange caught Lily's eye.

"Look!" she pointed to the thick black cable that stretched across the field. "It's glowing!"

Max squinted. Sure enough, the cable twinkled like it had swallowed a handful of fireflies. "Let's follow it!"

They started running, their sneakers pounding the dirt path, giggling as the cable led them past Mrs. Higgins' garden and through the whispering woods. The cable seemed to hum a happy tune, and they followed it all the way to the old oak tree at the edge of town.

There, perched on the lowest branch, sat a tiny creature no bigger than a baseball. He had sparkly blue wings and wore a miniature baseball cap.

"Hello!" the creature chirped. "I'm Pippin, the Wish-Spy. I spy on children's dreams and carry them up the cable to the Star-King. But my wing is stuck!"

Lily gasped. "A Wish-Spy? That's the most amazing thing ever!"

"How can we help?" Max asked.

"I need someone to throw my baseball pouch up the cable," Pippin explained. "It's filled with happy dreams. If it reaches the Star-King, he'll make tonight's meteor shower extra special!"

Max grabbed the tiny pouch. He'd been practicing his baseball throw all summer. He wound up, aimed carefully at the glowing cable, and—THROW!

The pouch soared perfectly, landing right where the cable reached toward the sky. Suddenly, the cable blazed with rainbow colors, and sparkles rained down on them.

"Thank you!" Pippin danced in the air. "Tonight, make a wish when the first star appears. The Star-King will hear it!"

That night, Lily and Max sat on their front porch, watching the most spectacular meteor shower they'd ever seen. And when the first star twinkled above, they both made the same wish:

"Let every child have a friend like Pippin to share adventures with."

And somewhere, high above the glowing cable, the Wish-Spy was already working on that wish, one happy dream at a time.
