The Scheme

Maya's phone was supposed to be her lifeline, but the charging cable had other plans. It frayed somewhere between third period and lunch, leaving her at 4% battery and spiraling.

"You want a sample?" Her mom's voice carried through the house. "It's got biotin, collagen—"

Maya grabbed a vitamin packet from the kitchen counter, shoving it in her pocket before escaping to her room. The pyramid scheme her mom had joined three weeks ago was taking over everything. Their living room looked like a wellness influencer's warehouse, stacks of supplements arranged in actual pyramids.

Her iPhone dimmed. 2%.

Chloe's party started in two hours. No phone meant no posting meant she might as well not exist.

"Honey, could you help me live stream?" Her mom appeared in the doorway, holding yet another box. "I promised the team I'd hit 500 views tonight."

Maya's stomach dropped. "Mom, I have plans."

"Just ten minutes. Please?"

Maybe it was the desperation in her mom's voice. Or maybe Maya realized she couldn't show up to Chloe's without posting anyway, so what did it matter?

The livestream was a disaster. Maya's hand shook holding the phone, her mom's voice pitching higher with each failed take. Fifteen viewers max.

"They're not buying it," Maya said finally.

Her mom's shoulders slumped. "I just wanted to contribute something real. You know?"

Maya looked at her—really looked. The expensive supplements, the "team," the desperate hope this would be their ticket to something more.

"Let me try," Maya said, taking the phone.

She didn't follow the script. Instead, she showed her mom's actual face—the tired eyes, the genuine smile, the imperfect kitchen lighting. She talked about why her mom had joined, not the products but the wanting to matter.

Views climbed. 500. 1,000. People commenting about how real it felt.

"See?" Maya said, her battery at 1%. "Nobody wants the pyramid scheme. They want you."

Her mom's lip trembled. "I thought—"

"I know." Maya checked the time. "I have to go."

"Take my cable," her mom said, pressing it into her hand. "The one I ordered for the livestreams."

Maya walked to Chloe's, phone charging in her pocket. She didn't post the party. She didn't post anything.

Some things didn't need to be content. Some things just were.
