The Scared Little Zombie

zombierunningfriendspinach

Leo was running through his grandmother's pumpkin patch when he heard someone crying.

Following the sound behind the biggest pumpkin, he found a small green creature with leafy hair, stitch-covered clothes, and the saddest eyes Leo had ever seen.

It looked just like the zombies from Leo's scary storybooks. But this zombie wasn't saying 'brains.' It was sobbing into a wilted bunch of spinach.

'Go away,' it sniffled, hiding its face. 'Everyone runs away from zombies.'

Leo knelt down. 'I'm not scared. What's wrong?'

The zombie peeked out. 'I'm lost. And hungry. This spinach tastes like old socks.' It looked at Leo's sandwich. 'What's that?'

'Turkey and cheese,' Leo said. 'Want half?'

The zombie's eyes went wide, sparkling like dewdrops. 'You'd share with... a zombie?'

'Everyone needs a friend,' Leo said simply, breaking the sandwich in half.

As the zombie ate, something magical happened. Its green skin began to glow golden-soft, like sunlight through leaves. It stood taller, looking less scary and more like a magical garden elf.

'I'm Sprout,' the creature smiled. 'The spinach was supposed to be magic food, but I needed friendship magic to truly come alive.'

Leo gasped as Sprout began running—so fast that he left sparkly trails! Leo chased after, laughing, running faster than he ever had before. They zoomed past dancing sunflowers and slid under tomato vines, the whole garden coming alive around them.

'Can we be friends forever?' Sprout asked as the sun began to set.

'Forever and ever,' Leo promised, hugging his new friend.

And every day after school, Leo would come running to the garden. He'd bring sandwiches, Sprout would bring magic adventures, and they'd zoom together—two friends proving that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need a little kindness to show how beautiful they really are.
