The Salad That Changed Everything

Maya's first day at Oak Creek High wasn't supposed to involve a fruit-based existential crisis, but there she was, staring at the lunch her mom packed—sliced papaya and fresh spinach like she was some kind of wellness influencer. Meanwhile everyone else had pizza. The social hierarchy of the cafeteria stretched before her like a minefield of judgment.

'Nice salad,' someone said. Maya looked up to see Riley, the girl with the perfectly messy curls and vintage band tees, sliding into the seat across from her. 'I mean, actually. My parents are vegan so I know the struggle.' Riley's phone buzzed with a notification. She ignored it, which felt intentional, like a tiny rebellion.

'Thanks,' Maya said, though it came out more like a question. 'My mom's going through this... phase.' She stabbed at the papaya. Why did healthy food always look like it was trying too hard?

'Tell me about it,' Riley laughed, then lowered her voice. 'Hey, I'm ditching third period. The photography club is meeting early, and Mr. Harrison never takes attendance anyway. You wanna come?'

They slipped out through the side door near the gym, the cool air hitting Maya's skin. Freedom felt different than she expected—less like a movie moment, more like quiet relief. Then she saw it: a fox, unmistakably a fox, standing at the edge of the parking lot near the woods, watching them with calm, unbothered golden eyes. For three seconds, Maya forgot to breathe. The fox tilted its head, then turned and melted into the trees like it had never existed.

'Did you see that?' Riley whispered, eyes wide. 'That was literally iconic.'

'Yeah,' Maya said, something in her chest shifting. 'Yeah, it was.'

They walked toward the art building in companionable silence, Maya's uneaten lunch still in her bag. The papaya could wait. Some moments were bigger than salad.
