The Running Zombie's New Friend
Maya loved running. Every morning, she would lace up her shiny purple sneakers and race through Sunflower Park, her braids flying behind her like two playful ponies. She ran past the sparkling pond where ducks sang quacky songs, and around the twisty oak trees that whispered secrets in the wind.
One sunny afternoon, while Maya was practicing her running for the big school race, she heard a strange noise coming from behind the old stone fountain. *Clomp, shuffle, clomp.* Maya crept closer, her heart beating like a tiny drum.
There, sitting all alone, was a zombie!
But this wasn't a scary zombie like in the movies. He had patchwork skin the color of emeralds and sky, with button eyes that sparkled like summer stars. He wore a floppy polka-dot hat and striped socks that didn't match. And he looked terribly sad.
"Hello," Maya said bravely. "Why are you sitting all alone?"
The zombie looked up with his button eyes. "I'm Zimby," he said in a voice like crunching autumn leaves. "Everyone runs away when they see me. They think I'm scary. But I just want someone to play with."
Maya smiled. "I'm Maya, and I LOVE running! Do you want to run with me?"
Zimby's patchwork face lit up. "Really? No one's ever asked me that before!"
And that's how the most unlikely friendship began. Every day, Maya and Zimby would run together through the park. Zimby was surprisingly fast! His clomping feet moved with magical grace, and he could leap over flowers without crushing a single petal.
They played tag with the butterflies and raced the squirrels up the trees. The other children in the park soon stopped running away. Instead, they gathered around to watch the amazing running zombie and his friend Maya.
On the day of the big school race, Maya was nervous. Her hands shook, and her knees felt wobbly. But Zimby was there, wearing his lucky striped socks and holding a beautiful dandelion he'd picked just for her.
"You're the fastest runner I know, Maya," Zimby said. "And the best friend too. Just remember — running is fun, no matter who wins!"
Maya ran the best race of her life. She didn't come in first place, but she crossed the finish line with the biggest smile, because Zimby was waiting there with a hug and a handful of wildflowers.
That day, everyone learned something wonderful: Sometimes the best friends are the ones you least expect, and the scariest-looking things can have the kindest hearts. And Maya and Zimby? They kept running together every day, two friends enjoying the magic of moving forward, side by side.
