The Running Goldfish's Wish
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's garden, especially the old stone pond in the backyard. Every day after school, she would kneel by the water's edge and watch the orange goldfish dart between the lily pads.
One warm afternoon, Lily noticed something peculiar. The smallest goldfish—a brilliant orange one she'd named Finney—kept jumping out of the water, landing on the grass, then flopping back into the pond with a splash.
"What are you doing?" Lily whispered, leaning closer.
Finney popped to the surface, his tiny mouth opening and closing. To Lily's amazement, a soft bubbly voice emerged, "I'm practicing!"
"Practicing what?"
"Running!" Finney declared. "Every night, when the moonlight touches the water just right, magic happens. For one hour, fish can grow legs and run on land. But I'm not fast enough. I want to see the world beyond this pond!"
Lily's eyes widened. "That's the most magical thing I've ever heard! Can I help?"
That evening, Lily waited by the pond as the silver moon rose. At midnight, sparkling light rippled across the water's surface. Finney grew two tiny legs and scrambled onto the grass.
"I'll teach you!" Lily said, running alongside him. "Bend your knees, pump your arms—well, your fins!"
They practiced together, Finney stumbling at first, then gaining confidence. Soon, they were running together through the garden, past the rosebushes and under the willow tree.
"Look at the stars!" Finney breathed. "And smell that jasmine! I never knew the world was so big!"
But as the hour neared its end, Finney looked sad. "I wish my friends could see this too."
Lily had an idea. "Tomorrow, bring your friends! I'll teach all of you!"
The next night, the pond came alive with goldfish growing legs and running through the garden. They laughed and chased fireflies, explored the flowerbeds, and danced in the moonlight.
Grandmother found them all at sunrise, Lily asleep on the grass surrounded by exhausted but happy fish back in their pond.
"So you discovered the secret," Grandmother smiled. "The magic only works for those with kind hearts. You gave Finney and his friends the greatest gift—adventure with a friend."
Lily learned that sometimes the best magic isn't in wishes granted, but in sharing wonder with others. And every night after, she would run through the garden with her goldfish friends, creating new adventures under the stars.
