The Runner's Shadow
Elena's feet hit the pavement at 5:47 AM, exactly as they had for seventeen years. Running was her meditation, her confession booth, the only place where the static in her head settled into something resembling clarity. But this morning, the rhythm felt wrong.
Three blocks from her target's brownstone, she spotted it—a glint of silver on a park bench. An iPhone. Not just any iPhone. HIS iPhone. The one she'd spent six months infiltrating his life to access. Robert Merrick, CEO of Chimera Technologies, the man she'd been hired to destroy through calculated corporate espionage. Now here it was, abandoned like common litter.
Her breath hitched. Wrong. Everything about this was wrong.
She kept running, circling the block twice before approaching the device. No password. Just a single note on the screen: 'I know what you are.'
Elena's finger trembled. The email app was already open. Messages not to a mistress, but to her. Emails she'd written. Reports she'd filed. Every surveillance photo she'd taken—he'd somehow obtained copies. The metadata proved it: he'd had them for weeks.
And then she understood. The phone wasn't abandoned. It was bait.
The sound of running shoes behind her.
"You're getting sloppy, Elena."
She turned to find Robert Merrick grinning in the pre-dawn gray, winded from his own run. "I've been watching you watch me since March."
"Why?"
"Because my competitors hired you, and I wanted to see how good you really were." He tossed her a burner phone. "Call them. Tell them you failed. Then call me. I have a proposition."
Elena stood frozen as he continued his run, disappearing into the morning mist. For the first time in her career, she wasn't the hunter. She wasn't even the prey. She was something else entirely—a runner who'd just been recruited into a different kind of race.
