The River's Secret Friend
Lily and Ben loved playing by the old river behind their house. The water rushed over smooth stones, sparkling like diamonds in the sunlight. Every afternoon after school, they would race to see who could reach their favorite sitting log first.
"I'm going to win!" Ben called, his shoes splashing through shallow puddles as he ran alongside the flowing stream. Lily laughed, her yellow ribbons fluttering behind her like butterfly wings.
One Tuesday, something strange happened. As they rounded the bend near the willow tree, they saw him—a boy about their age, walking very slowly with stiff arms and a dazed expression. His clothes were muddy, and his face looked pale and confused.
"It's a zombie!" Ben whispered, grabbing Lily's arm. But Lily noticed something important. The boy wasn't groaning or trying to scare anyone. He just looked thirsty and lost.
Instead of running away, Lily stepped forward. "Are you okay?" she asked gently.
The boy blinked slowly. "I... I've been walking for so long. I'm so thirsty."
Lily and Ben looked at each other. This wasn't a zombie at all—just someone who needed help!
"Our house is right there!" Ben said, pointing through the trees. "We have fresh water!"
Together, they led the boy to their backyard. Their mom brought him a tall glass of cool water, which he drank gratefully. His name was Toby, and he'd wandered away from a family picnic earlier that day, getting turned around in the woods.
"Thank you," Toby said, his color returning. "I felt like I was walking in my sleep. You saved me."
That afternoon, Lily and Ben learned something important: sometimes things that seem scary at first are really just people who need a little kindness and help. And that's how the river brought them their newest friend.
