The River's Secret Friend

Lily loved visiting the river behind her grandmother's house. Every summer morning, she would slip out the back door, her curly red hair bouncing in the warm breeze, and follow the winding path through the tall grass.

One particularly hot day, Lily was running toward the water when she spotted something unusual. A small brown dog with the softest, shiniest hair she had ever seen sat by the river's edge, watching her with kind, intelligent eyes. But this wasn't just any dog—his fur shimmered like rainbow trout scales in the sunlight.

"Hello," Lily whispered, not wanting to startle him. The dog's tail wagged slowly, creating tiny ripples in the water where it dipped. "My name is River," the dog said in a voice like bubbling brooks and summer rain.

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"Only to those with pure hearts and wild imaginations," River replied. "I've been waiting for someone like you, Lily. Someone who believes in magic."

For weeks, Lily and River became best friends. They played chase in the meadow, and River would show her secret places—the nest of baby blue jays high in the oak tree, the patch of strawberries that grew the sweetest fruit, the ancient willow with a hollow trunk perfect for hiding treasures.

But one day, River arrived looking sad. "Lily, I must tell you the truth. I'm the spirit of this river. My real home is in the water, but I became too curious about the world above. Now I need to return, or the river will forget how to flow."

Lily felt tears well up. "I'll miss you so much."

"True friends are never truly apart," River said. "Every time you see sunlight dancing on the water, or hear the river singing against the rocks, I'll be there. And every summer, I'll visit you in this special form."

As River stepped into the water, his dog form dissolved into sparkling blue light that merged with the river's current. The water suddenly became clearer, brighter, and more alive than ever before.

Now whenever Lily visits, she splashes in the water and laughs, knowing her friend is always there—flowing, dancing, and waiting for their next summer adventure together. And sometimes, if she's very still, she can still hear the river whisper her name.
