The Ripple Dog

Lily sat by the old pond behind her house, trailing her fingers in the cool water. She had just moved to this new town and didn't know anyone yet.

"I wish I had a friend," she whispered to her reflection.

Suddenly, the pond began to shimmer. Tiny ripples swirled together, forming the shape of a small, wagging tail. Then ears popped up, and finally a friendly face made entirely of water droplets!

"Hello!" barked the water puppy. "I'm Splash! Are you lonely?"

Lily gasped but didn't run away. "You're... you're a dog made of water!"

"I'm YOUR friend now," Splash said, his tail creating little waves. "I live in this pond, but I've been waiting for someone who needs me."

Every day after school, Lily visited Splash. He would leap from the pond in a sparkling arc of water and they'd play tag, chase butterflies, and have adventures in the woods. Splash could change his shape—becoming tall to help Lily reach apples, or spreading out like a slide when she wanted to play.

"You're the best friend ever," Lily told him one evening as the sun painted the sky orange.

But as summer faded, the pond grew shallower. Splash began to look worried.

"What's wrong?" Lily asked.

"Autumn means less rain," Splash said sadly. "If the pond dries up, I'll disappear. But don't worry—I had so much fun being your friend."

Lily's heart squeezed tight. She couldn't lose her best friend!

That night, she had an idea. She woke up early and dug a tiny canal from the garden hose to the pond. Then she set up buckets to catch rainwater. Every day, she carefully added more water to the pond.

Her parents saw what she was doing and helped. They bought a small pump to keep the pond full.

"Real friendship means taking care of each other," Lily's mom said with a smile.

Splash grew strong again, dancing across the water in joy.

"Thank you, Lily," he splashed. "You're not just my friend—you're my family now."

And so Lily learned that true magic isn't just about wonderful things happening—it's about what you're willing to do to keep them. Especially when a friend needs you.
